“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter-when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?”

Isaiah 58:6-7

Many churches participate in a corporate fast this time of year. A corporate fast is when the entire congregation fasts for a specific period of time. Some people fast to grow their relationship with God. Others fast to detox their body or mind. Whatever your reason for fasting, this verse tells us that not eating, or “depriving” ourselves of something we want, is not the whole of it. It challenges us to not only think about what we are giving up, but to begin thinking about what we are giving to others, specifically those who don’t have a choice whether or not they go without.   Whether you are doing the Daniel Fast, Total Fast, fasting from Social Media, etc… go one step further, and look for opportunities to pour into someone else, as God pours into you.

Prayers to all of you this “Fasting Season”!
